About server response time

Server response time is how long a server takes to receive a request and return a response. It's a key driver of page speed — a slow server delays everything that follows, hurting user experience and Core Web Vitals.

This test makes several real requests from our server and reports the fastest, average and slowest, with a transparent rating derived directly from the numbers. Because it runs from our vantage point, use it to compare servers rather than to measure your own connection, and note the first request may be slower due to a cold TCP/TLS connection.

What exactly is measured?

The full response time from our server — connect, server processing and download — averaged over several real requests, reported as fastest, average and slowest.

Why is the first request slower?

The first request opens a fresh TCP/TLS connection (a cold start). Later samples reuse warm connections and are usually faster, which is why we run several.

Is this my response time?

It's measured from our server's location, so it's best for comparing servers or CDNs rather than measuring your own connection to the site.

How is the rating calculated?

Directly from the average: under 200 ms is excellent, under 500 ms good, under 1 s fair, and slower is rated down from there. No hidden factors.
